How many weeks will you use it this month? ?If you only activate Roam for a week-long trip, select 1. Your billing cycle is still a full month but this adjusts the usage estimate to match your actual time online.

2 Low Data Mode ?Low Data Mode reduces background data by pausing updates, sync, and lowering streaming quality. The single biggest data saver.

Do you have Low Data Mode (or equivalent) enabled on your devices?

iPhone - Low Data Mode
Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the (i) next to your Starlink network → toggle Low Data Mode ON.
This is per-network, so it only applies when connected to Starlink - your home broadband stays unaffected.
iPad - Low Data Mode
Same as iPhone: Settings → Wi-Fi → tap (i) next to Starlink → Low Data Mode ON.
If you set it on your iPhone, iCloud syncs the preference - your iPad should pick it up automatically for the same network.
Android - Data Saver
Settings → Network & internet → Data Saver → toggle ON.
Note: Android Data Saver is global (not per-network). It restricts background data for all apps.
Windows - Metered Connection
Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → click your Starlink network → toggle Metered connection ON.
This pauses Windows Updates, OneDrive sync, and tells apps to reduce background data. Per-network setting.
Mac - Low Data Mode
System Settings → Wi-Fi → click (...) next to your Starlink network → Low Data Mode ON.
Available since macOS Ventura. Also manually pause iCloud Drive, Time Machine over Wi-Fi, and disable auto-updates in System Settings → Software Update → Automatic Updates.
Smart TV - No built-in data saver
Smart TVs don't have a Low Data Mode. Instead:
• Lower streaming quality in each app (Netflix, YouTube, Stan) to SD or 720p
• Disable autoplay next episode
• Turn off "Quick Start" or "Instant On" (uses data in standby)
• Delete unused apps (they auto-update in background)
• Disable Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) in TV settings
Every brand is different - check your TV's settings menu under Privacy or Smart Features.

3 Streaming ?Netflix, Stan, Disney+, Kayo, Binge, Prime Video, etc.

Streaming quality ?SD is standard definition (DVD quality). HD is high definition (1080p). 4K is ultra-high definition. Most phones and tablets look fine at SD - you'll mainly notice the difference on larger screens like TVs.

4 YouTube / TikTok ?Short-form and long-form video. YouTube auto quality uses ~1.5 GB/hr.

0 GB
Hours per day 0 hrs
Days per week
Video quality ?Data Saver reduces YouTube to 480p. Auto/HD lets YouTube choose quality based on your connection - typically 720p-1080p on Starlink.

5 Plex Remote Streaming ?Streaming from your home Plex server while away. Data depends on quality setting.

0 GB
Hours per day 0 hrs
Days per week
Remote streaming quality ?These match Plex's Remote Streaming quality settings. Lower bitrate means less data but lower picture quality. Most people won't notice a difference below 4 Mbps on a phone or tablet.

6 Voice & Video Calls ?FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp, Messenger calls.

Video call quality ?HD video calls look sharper but use 3x more data than SD. SD is fine for most calls. Enabling Low Data Mode on Apple devices automatically drops FaceTime to SD.

7 Music & Podcasts ?Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, podcasts. Tip: download playlists on WiFi before travelling.

~0.07 GB/hr (normal quality)

8 Social & Browsing ?Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, email, general web browsing.

Browsing type ?Video Feeds means heavy TikTok, Instagram Reels, or Facebook video scrolling. Mixed is a typical blend of text, photos, and some video. Text/Email is mostly reading with minimal images.

9 Online Gaming ?Gameplay itself uses surprisingly little data. Game downloads and updates are the real data hogs.

Hours per day 0 hrs
Days per week
~0.2 GB/hr (gameplay only - downloads not included, see Background Data)

10 Background Data Vampires ?These run silently in the background. Many people don't realise how much data they consume.

0 GB
iCloud / Google Photos Sync ?Your phone automatically uploads every photo and video to the cloud. On a trip, holiday snaps sync immediately - a single day of photos can use several GB. ~5 GB/mo
App Auto-Updates ?Apps update themselves silently over Wi-Fi. With 50+ apps installed, updates can quietly add up to several GB each month. ~3 GB/mo
Background App Refresh ?Apps like Facebook, Instagram, and news apps refresh content in the background even when you are not using them. ~2 GB/mo
OS / System Updates ?iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS download updates automatically. A single major update can be 2-5 GB. ~2 GB/mo
Cloud Sync (OneDrive, Dropbox) ?Cloud storage services sync files in both directions. New or changed files download automatically when connected. ~3 GB/mo
Game Downloads / Updates ?Game patches and updates can be massive - a single update can be 5-50 GB. Turn off automatic downloads if gaming on Starlink. ~5 GB/mo
Speed Tests ?Each speed test downloads and uploads data to measure your connection. The faster your internet, the more data each test uses. One test at full Starlink speed uses about half a GB. ~0.5 GB per test at 260 Mbps

System Settings → Wi-Fi → click (...) next to Starlink → Low Data Mode ON
Also: pause iCloud Drive sync and disable automatic macOS updates in Software Update settings.
No built-in data saver on smart TVs. Manually:
• Set each streaming app to SD/720p quality
• Disable autoplay and Quick Start/Instant On
• Delete unused apps to stop background updates
0 GB 100 GB cap

⚠️ You're over the 100 GB cap

Once you hit 100 GB, Starlink throttles your speed to ~0.5 Mbps until your next billing cycle. Upgrading to Unlimited removes the cap entirely.
